Erecycling

What importance does separating waste and recycling at home have?

Reciclar basura en el hogar: Importancia de separar residuos

There is still a significant sector of society that, due to lack of awareness, does not recycle at home. However, younger generations are growing up with a greater awareness of the importance of these practices, which are increasingly necessary.

The process of recycling at home is more important than we imagine, as household consumption is the largest destination for global production. It is a process that becomes simple and routine with practice, without the need for extensive efforts. Let’s explain how. It’s very simple!

Firstly, let’s remember the ‘RRR rule’: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The first one, reduce, is based on not buying things that we really don’t need or that are surplus, leaving behind unnecessary purchases and trying to avoid having expired products or unused clothing at the back of the wardrobe. It means not buying things that won’t be useful, especially if we know they are harmful to the environment or if they cannot have further uses.

Next: reuse, which involves continuing to give products a useful life that we thought would be discarded. Cans can be used as containers for materials, pens, etc. Paper often has many available spaces for notes, bags can always have various uses, as well as boxes and other containers.

Finally: recycle. It is the last action we should take while products are in our homes by separating the waste by materials for subsequent placement in their corresponding containers:

  • Yellow: For plastic containers.
  • Blue: Paper and cardboard.
  • Green: Glass, usually bottles.
  • Organic: For food waste, napkins with leftovers, etc.
  • Recycling centers: Products that cannot be thrown into conventional containers.

In these processes, it is crucial not to mix waste, paying attention to separating the waste according to their materials.

The proper recycling efforts of families largely determine how well we can maintain our planet, making it an important responsibility and a beautiful action.
